When you set yourself goals to achieve, it is more than likely you are going to have to change your daily habits in one way or another to do so. But what happens when the people around you try to, or without even realising, hold you back?
While to some people changing habits may seem like a compromise, to those who are committed to getting themselves where they want to be, it is simply just a change of priorities – swapping things that can hold you back, such as indulging in your favourite takeaway or having that extra drink on a night out, for behaviours which will help you progress in the way you want to. Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain or just a slight change to your body composition, these new behaviours are essential.
A NEGATIVE SUPPORT SYSTEM
But what do you do if the people around you aren’t supportive of your new priorities and new behaviours? If they don’t understand or if they constantly question ‘why’? If they consciously, or subconsciously, hold you back?
Parents who think you’re exercising too much, friends who question why you swap your chips for a salad or your usual pint of cider for a soft drink and work colleagues who make snide comments about your healthy, pre-prepared lunch. It’s really not uncommon to have to deal with these types of circumstances.
Sadly, a lot of people are more likely to criticise people that are doing well – maybe because they are jealous, because they know they can’t do it themselves or maybe just through lack of understanding – than show encouragement and support.
It’s the classic mentality of a bully… attack what you fear.
Support from the people you are closest to, or those who you spend most of your time with can be so important when trying to keep yourself motivated and driven towards your end goal. The days when you want to skip your morning workout or feel like giving in and want to binge on that massive bar of chocolate but don’t, are only going to be reinforced if you have people around you to help you to remember why you are making these choices and remind you of how well you are doing so far.
DOING IT FOR YOU
If you have a positive support system, use it. There’s nothing more motivating. But if you don’t, do not worry. Because you can still get where you want to be alone – through your own hard work and dedication. Just remember who you are doing it for, who you are making the changes for and who they are really going to affect in the end. If you want something, don’t let anyone hold you back.
