When most people are asked what it means to be healthy, they normally respond with the four components of fitness: cardio respiratory ability, muscular ability, flexibility and body composition.
Although these components are a critical part of being healthy, they are not however the only contributing factors. Physical health is only one aspect of overall health, and many, many others are just as important.
Wellness is the active process of becoming aware of, and making choices towards, a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s more than just being free of illness; it is a dynamic process of change and growth. Ultimately it’s the search for enhanced quality of life and potential, only truly achievable through positive lifestyle behaviours and attitudes.
Wellness matters. It matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our wellbeing. In turn, our wellbeing directly affects our actions and emotions. It’s an ongoing circle.
There are eight main dimensions of wellness. Each dimension is interrelated with another, yet are each equally vital.
Emotional wellness relates to understanding your own feelings and being able to effectively cope with stress. Looking for optimal emotional wellness? Prioritise self care and relaxation as well as finding things which help you to reduce your own personal stress levels – be that spending time with friends, taking part in exercise, or simply sitting down with your feet up in front of the TV.
Environmental wellbeing promotes respectful interaction with nature and our surroundings. Everyone can have a strong environmental conscious simply by raising their awareness, and Do your best to live in harmony with the earth by taking action to protect it, and in return build a strong environmental wellbeing.
Possibly one that’s struggled with the most? Money plays a major role in our lives and not having enough of it can impact health, but how? Financial worries are said to be a common source of stress, anxiety and fear for many individuals, especially those in early adulthood. By learning how to successfully manage your expenses each month, it’s possible to achieve financial wellness.
Do you have an open mind when it comes to new ideas and opportunities? Do you work to continually expand your knowledge? Intellectual wellness encourages active participation in an endless amount of educational, cultural and community activities, all which are likely to help an individual to grow.
Sat everyday in a job that you don’t enjoy? If so, this is affecting your occupational wellbeing no end. Occupational wellness encourages personal satisfaction in an individual’s work life, and is about enjoying what you do and being happy with the contribution your efforts make.
Probably the dimension that people are most aware of… Physical wellness relates to the desire to maintain a healthy body, which is often attained through exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep and paying attention to signs that you need to rest.
There are an endless number of reasons people participate in regular exercise, but many do so partly to improve the current, and consequently their future, level of health. As we strive toward an optimal state of physical wellbeing, our lifestyle may change. And as we make these improvements to our lifestyle, our health follows suit.
A strong social wellbeing comes from the ability to understand and perform social roles effectively. Once this is achieved, not only do you develop encouraging and supportive relationships with peers, but you also allow for more intimate relationships with romantic partners.
Time to get a little deep. This type of wellness allows you to develop a set of values that help you seek meaning and purpose. It’s not just about spirits, souls and auras though. Being spiritually well could be as simple as knowing which resources to use, or how to relax, when coping with issues that can come up in everyday life.
